What to pack for a fitness photoshoot

If you're planning a fitness photoshoot with an Atlanta fitness photographer like Lola Land Photography, packing all the right gear is essential. Whether you're a fitness model, personal trainer, or just looking to showcase your hard-earned gains, having the right clothes and equipment can make all the difference.

Here's a handy checklist of what to pack for your fitness photoshoot:

  1. Workout Clothes: This might seem obvious, but make sure you have several outfit options to choose from. Finding workout sets is probably the easiest route as the brand has already done the work for you with combining sports bras and leggings to shorts/t-shirt combos.

When mixing and matching sets, match the colors/tones exactly or make sure they contrast each other noticeably. Keep in mind, when colors are slightly off in person, this is exaggerated in images.

In a lot of sports, there tends to be different types of outfits depending on the occasion too. For example, if a boxer is lifting, he’s probably in more comfortable athletic attire than when he’s in the gym sparring where he’ll be wearing comfortable boxing trunks and a rash guard so that his training partner doesn’t get caught in his loose clothing. Then on fight day, he’ll have a fancy outfit with likely bold design and personal branding with matching trunks, boxing shoes, gloves, robe and headgear. Think about how this may apply to you as a different type of competitor, a fitness coach or otherwise.

  2. Athletic Shoes: Bring a variety of shoes. It's always good to have starting white and black pairs that match everything, but jazzing it up with a funky pair if you have something unique is highly recommended. Then there’s boxing shoes, wrestling shoes and other sport specific footwear. Definitely bring those to complete your look.

Don't forget your dress shoes if you’re doing an alternate set such as headshots or boudoir and sandals/slides for casual looks. With our fitness photoshoots we tend to mix lifestyle into the sessions so you leave with a variety of portraits that you’ll not only love, but helps your audience connect with you on a personal level outside of your athletic endeavors.

  3. Accessories: Accessories are what create narriative and realism. Think: Apple Watch, jump rope, bands, sports cap, shaker bottle, sports tape, mouth guard, headgear, hand wraps, sweat suit, heart monitor, lifting chalk, shin guards, track bag, agility ladder, digital workout tracker. All of those accessories probably made you think of a specific athletic genre. These are ways we add visual cues and increase the visual narrative on set.

  4. Refreshments: Make sure your water bottle has some solid electrolytes because, at least with our sessions, these tend to be a bit of a workout. You are going to want to stay hydrated and energized throughout. Afterwards you may be hungry too, so don’t forget snacks, even if it’s the healthiest of options like nuts/berries or peanut butter and rice cakes.

  5. Props: Depending on the type of fitness photoshoot you're aiming for, there may be some props that you should pack along. This ties into the accessories conversation, but here is what I’d say is a bit more literally associated with your sport: Boxing gloves, football, golf club, volleyball, baseball bat, jiu jitsu go, Muay Thai trunks or a yoga mat are just a few examples of items that can help bring clarity to the session.

Overall, the key to a successful fitness photoshoot is preparation so that we can create a visual narrative that showcases your physique, the athletic endeavors you’re involved in, the clientele you wish to attract and your overall personal branding.
